This locomotive, built by Motor Rail of Bedford in 1937 (Works No. 7053), is based on a type that worked to the front lines, this time on the Allies side, during WW1. "Spitfire" was obtained from the North West Gloucestershire Water Board who had inherited it from Gloucester Corporation when the water undertakings were grouped in 1964. It had been originally obtained by the Corporation to move materials in connection with the construction of the Estcourt Road section of the Gloucester Ring Road
